Pairing a long coat with trainers

The coat sets the line. Trainers add lightness, as long as the rest stays easy to read.

Start with the coat’s line

A long coat already creates a strong vertical line. To keep the outfit easy to read, choose an understated top and trousers that do not compete with the coat’s length.

The coat does not need to reach your ankles to work. Focus on shoulder room and how it moves as you walk.

Keep the trainers understated

An ecru or white low-top trainer lightens the base of the silhouette. A very chunky sole or several colours draws more attention: it can work, but then calmer trousers help.

City trainers are not a substitute for walking or sports shoes. Check support and sole design for your journeys.

Change one volume at a time

With a straight coat, straight-leg trousers create a simple line. With a relaxed cut, keep the top and shoes quieter so the outfit retains its shape.

Notice how the trouser hem falls over the shoe: too much fabric on the ground blurs the line; too little can make the coat harder to balance.

Before you buy

Try the combination with pieces you already own. Check the coat’s material, care and rain protection; an image cannot tell you those things.

Compare a garment that fits you with the seller’s size chart, and check returns before choosing a size.
