Headwear changes the look
A hat adds a line and presence around the face. A cap draws less attention and pairs easily with jeans, an overshirt or a weekend outfit.
Start with the occasion and weather before choosing a colour. Headwear chosen only to complete a picture may end up staying in the wardrobe.
When to choose a hat
With a straight coat or blazer, a soft brim can echo the outfit’s vertical line without making it ceremonial. Keep other accessories understated.
Check head circumference, brim width and how it sits in the wind. Felt is not automatically waterproof, and a photo cannot show how securely it fits.
When to choose a cap
A cap works well when you want to make an outfit less formal. A plain adjustable shape lets your shoes or coat take the lead.
Check depth, adjustment and room for glasses. Lightweight fabric does not guarantee enough sun protection.
Try a simple combination
Wear the headwear with the jacket and shoes you plan to use, then look at the silhouette from the side. Your head should not feel disconnected from the rest of the outfit.
If you are still unsure, choose a comfortable shape that is easy to wear. Pick a colour based on what you already own.
